The annual Kirkland Shamrock Run is the weekend prior to Paddy’s Day, on Saturday, March 12th. This 5K fun run begins and ends at Marina Park, looping through downtown Kirkland. Walkers, dogs, strollers and kids are all welcome to join this colorful event that has become a St. Patrick’s Day tradition for many Kirkland residents. Wilde Rover is hosting the post-race party, so stop by after you cross the finish line for a pint and some Irish fare! We’ll be playing traditional Irish music during dinner on Saturday and Sunday to continue the festivities in preparation for the big day.
Saint Patrick’s Day is a religious and cultural celebration of Saint Patrick, who died on March 17th 461 AD, and the introduction of Christianity to Ireland. Tradition says that St. Patrick used a shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to pagan Irish, hence the prevalence of three-leaf clovers on the holiday. Traditions include wearing green—the color of Irish nationalism—parades, festivals, pub parties, and spending time with friends and family. The holiday has extended around the world as a celebration of Irish heritage and culture. St. Paddy’s Day is widely celebrated in the United States as a day to raise a glass and spread good cheer.
